DIY fridge magnet photo frames

Fridge magnet faces! Or quotes, whatever you feel like putting in a frame on your fridge! This cute and quick craft can be perfect for a last-minute gift idea, a Mother’s Day gift, a gift for the grandparents, a quick update to your decor, or a craft to involve the kids with.

A few years ago I made these cute little crochet fridge frame magnets as a gift to my Mother-In-Law and now that they’ve been loved and well worn for a few years, and the kids have grown so much, they needed an update.

This time I wanted to make them a bit more robust, more able to handle being pulled off the fridge by the kids because they love looking at the pictures of themselves and putting them in age order, don’t you dare put them in a different order or mix them up, my kids will always put them back in age order!

So this time I used a 10cm metal hoop (You can get these from Spotlight), and I wanted to play around with different styles of either crocheting or simply wrapping the hoops in yarn, hence the eclectic mix of styles I ended up with! I wanted to show a few different ways you could do this with whatever you have at home, even if you don’t crochet!

To make them sturdier than the last lot, I made sure to laminate them. Last time I had proper photos printed at a store, but I did not laminate them and the photo paper just isn’t strong enough to outlast my kids games. So this time I printed the photos at home, laminated them and stuck them onto thick card before I glued the hoops on. I then put stick-on magnets on the back of the photo and used a hot glue gun to stick the hoops onto the photos.

Blue wave hoop

For the blue hoop, I worked a single crochet around the hoop, then fastened off the yarn. Before I joined it, I spun the row of single crochet around to create a wave effect around the hoop. I then sewed the ends together and sewed the end along the hoop.

Mustard flower hoop

For the mustard hoop I worked single crochet stitches all around the hoop, then I worked a single crochet, chain 3 and skipped a stitch and repeated that around to the start. Then I fastened the yarn off and sewed in the end.

Pink and white hoop

For the pink and white hoop, I just tied the yarn in one spot then wrapped the yarn around the length of the hoop. Tied a knot at the end and sewed the remaining end into the hoop.

White cloud hoop

And finally for the little cloud hoop, I used some chunky cotton rope I got from Kmart, any type of macrame rope would work with this one. I used a hot glue gun to attach one end to the hoop and I simply wrapped the hoop. I was sure to keep the twist consistent with the rope so that it would look consistent the whole way around. I then cut the end and used a hot glue gun to stick the end to the hoop. The hot glue spot became the back of the hoop to hide the glue.

Here is a clip of putting the stick on magnets on the photos and gluing the hoops on. I did have to go back and add another 2 magnets to the white cloud hoop as it was heavier than the others.

Which one is your favourite? My son Owen asked me that question, I think he was fishing for me to say his one was my favourite, but I don’t know! I like them all for different reasons! I like how they are all unique and have their own personality to them, just like my kids do. There would be so many other ways you could personalise this to your own style, using ribbon, jute, raffia, cotton, bakers twine, cotton balls, pom poms, felt, and material, you could even glue spare lego blocks onto the hoop to make a lego frame!

The only limitation is your imagination.
