Christmas Paper Chain Garland Crochet Pattern

I am in a Christmas zone at the moment and I am actually loving making all the Christmas craft projects!

My latest project is this made-to-last version of one of my favourite kids crafts, the humble paper chain. I love making paper chains with the kids but do hate that they just fall apart so easily when the kids take them and start running up and down the hall with them. Yes, I know that’s not what they are made for… but you try telling my kids that! They are fun streamers to trail behind you up and down the hallway, I get it, but man it’s annoying!

Enter the paper chain garland! It is super beginner-friendly, so much so you could probably teach the kids how to crochet using this pattern as it is just 30 rows of 5 single crochet stitches. Or set yourself up with a movie marathon, switch off the brain, and let your fingers go nuts with it, you’ll have a long garland in no time! Also, this garland will pack away, and will be able to be used time and time again for years and years, until you pass it on to your kids for them to decorate their homes with!

Materials needed

2 balls of each colour of Jolly & Joy Chain Yarn in Champagne, Lime, Red & Silver.

4mm Crochet hook

Darning needle and scissors

My garland has turned out to be 4.1 meters long. This was using two balls of each colour to create this length, so if you want a longer garland, add in one more of each colour, or add a 5th colour! My garland has 26 chain links of each colour.

Crochet Pattern

Row 1: Chain 6, SC in second CH from hook, SC in each CH across.

Row 2-30: CH 1, SC in each stitch across.

See, super easy. I found it useful to make one, then use that as a template and just hold up the next one against it to check the length rather than counting the rows all the time. But that’s just me being lazy… or brilliant and efficient… either way! I also worked out that they are the exact same length as my 4mm clover crochet hook. So find something that is the size you are making and keep that with you to measure against!

Once you have reached your 30 rows, you can either slip stitch the ends together or cut the yarn and use your needle to sew the ends together and sew in your ends at the same time. Once you have made your second one, slide it through the first one and either SL ST or sew the ends together. Then chuck a movie on and get mindless making. Crafting where you can switch your brain off is my favourite!

Colour patterns

Now let’s talk colour order. This gave me a bit of a headache. I started using 5 colours, but decided that I didn’t love the white as they hardly had any sparkle through them, unlike the other colours which have a great amount of sparkle through them. So I started out just doing 5 random colours and mixing up the order as long as the 5 colours were done before I started the next 5 again. Until I took out the white, then the colours just didn’t look great all random. So I took it all apart, sewn in ends and all and started again with the 4 colours in order and kept repeating that order and I prefer the look of this so much more.

What do you think? My Mum thinks it looks too ordered and prefers the random look, but I love that you can get the red and green vibes from one angle and the gold and silver vibes from another angle and then if you twist the garland then you get the mix of all 4 colours.

Now like the ‘professional’ blogger that I am, I totally pulled my Christmas tree out of storage to be able to take proper photos to show you what it looks like around my tree, and with all my holiday decor. WRONG! I am a totally unprofessional blogger, with no space in her home to be pulling out a Christmas tree in September. So these photos will have to do you until I can update this post with proper photos in November because that’s when the tree will come out for real.
